Cheapest DSL, cheapest broadband, cheap DSL and Cable internet. Comcast SBC DSL. Trick.
Cheapest DSL or cable : are you game ? This article is for people who
stay in an area covered by both Comcast and SBC DSL (basically multiple
broadband providers) !! If you do not care much about saving money you
should not be reading this article at all . I found this trick useful and I am sharing this ..
Comcast provides one of the best broadband internet access in US .. so much that if you and tell them you are using SBC DSL .. they will say “Sir do you know you are not using broadband !! ” . Blasting speeds ( around 4mbps ) from comcast .. but they charge you around $50 a month which is very expensive unless you badly need such high speeds. DSL provides ( SBC DSL ) around 1mbps which is good enough unless you are downloading very high quality videos daily. So the bottomline is both of them are ok for most users. SBC DSL is also expensive if you are on a month-to-month .. around $40 !! Now lets look at the deals and how to use them.
SBC DSL provides you DSL at around $15 per month if you signup for a
year … free dsl modem .. and some free yahoo stuff .. sign up for a
year .. keep a note of when you signup .. maybe some some reminder to
let you know when you one year is up. Do not signup for their sbc yahoo
mail … use some other provider.. gmail or yahoo .. for email. Basically
dont get attached to them as you do not want a long term relationship.
You can signup on the web.. or watch out for bestbuy deals … bestbuy and
some websites offer you around $50 gift certificates for signing up
through them. So you end up paying ($15 X 12) - $50 ie around $10 a
month for the year … + the free modem Now what happens when your one year is up ??? Read on.
Comcast is one provider who does not believe in commitments. With 15 to 30 days left for your DSL commitment, start your search for Comcast internet deal. Search on google and you will find free cash offers for comcast internet .. and that too at $19 a month for 6 months. Easy to find. So sign up for 6 months, get a $75 check just for signing up and a free cable modem too. Cancel your DSL atleast a week before .. SBC DSL claims that they need a few days for the cancellation to be processed. So enjoy the superfast comcast for 6 months .. at ($19 X 6) - $75 = around $9 per month. When 6 months are up.. sign up for SBC DSL again … SBC does not care .. they will let you sign up … !! Their (comcast or SBC Yahoo DSL ) definition of new customer is 3 months or 6 months of absence !!
Ensure that you do not get attached to comcast free email or SBC
Yahoo mailbox or other services .. so that you can switch smoothly !!
Have fun.. and save money. Its just a few clicks to switch connections
at your PC or the router. Instead of paying $50 X 12 = $600 a year ..
you end up paying around $100 … around $500 savings a year … a few extra
clicks. Hope you find it useful.. I saved a lot using this trick

Very nice. I currently use comcast and it is rediculous
July 16th, 2006 at 5:10 pm
Plus, if you get a new cable/dsl modem everytime, or even a new router every time, ebay ‘em
July 16th, 2006 at 5:32 pm
How about us who dont want phone or Tv packaged with the deal? i fail to see how this works because SBC always requires me to have at least basic Phone service at an additional $20 a month besides the charge for DSL
July 16th, 2006 at 6:17 pm
Psssst. Comcast offers 6mbps, unless you have no cable in the house… then it’s 4.
July 16th, 2006 at 6:18 pm
Good one! But I thought comcast has a contract for 1year. You mentioned we can switch to yahoo dsl after 6 months introductory period.
RESPONSE: Atleast for bayarea, comcast has no contract and search on google and u will find deals for $19 for 6 months. Check for your area.

That’s the coolest goddam thing I’ve heard all day!
July 16th, 2006 at 7:23 pm
I have adelphia cable here in south florida, they offer their cable internet package for a very reduced rate for 3 months, and they need either a new customer name and phone number; or you (your name) must leave them for 3 months to be a “new customer”. Only 3 month contract. So simply switch customer names and numbers, give them your dogs name, and give them your cell phone, then fip back to your wife/GFs name, and her cellphone, and flip back to your own name and phone. They ask you for your phone number and name of the account holder, they dont need verification (you just have to be related to that person when they ask - mother, bro, friend etc).
They cancel you instantly, I’d wait a day, and it takes a day maybe 3 reactivate your modem. They wont care if you change your name from Bill to William as the account holder, or use your middle name - get creative and enjoy the cheep tv+internet.

When I went into Circuit City to sign up for Comcast they give you $100 back in form of gift card, they must not have updated their signs because it only said $75. So, (19X6) -100 = aroung $5 a month.
July 16th, 2006 at 7:47 pm
“Blasting speeds ( around 4mbps ) from comcast .. but they charge you around $50 a month which is very expensive unless you badly need such high speeds.” - Are you serious? For our area, it’s $50 a month… for 256k.
No joke at all. - www.hamilton.net - I live in a more rural area of Nebraska, which royally sucks, and that company has a monopoly. I’ts 75 a month for 512k.
I’d gladly pay $50 a month for 4mbps.
July 16th, 2006 at 7:51 pm
I’ve heard if you just call Comcast and tell them you’re going to switch, they’ll offer the discounted price for another 6 months.
RESPONSE: when i called and told them i m switching to SBC.. she said ..”Sir did u know that theirs is not broadband !!”
.. and offered me a reduced rate .. some $30 per month .. but I want to pay only $15 per month
July 16th, 2006 at 8:09 pm
LOL @ 4Mb speeds… 8Mb minimum up to 24Mb with my current DSL provider… and 2Mb upload.
Good idea though.
July 16th, 2006 at 8:10 pm
I wish I could do something like that here.
In Australia it is ~$80 for 1.5mb @40gb
July 16th, 2006 at 8:49 pm
Sounds great, but to get SBC DSL, you must have a (voice) phone line through them. So, won’t work for those of us who just have a cellphone. But nice writeup!
July 16th, 2006 at 8:59 pm
Yeah another thing to add is that I recently stopped paying for comcast cable internet because it’s so expensive but I still have the modem. But weird enough I get a redirect to comcast website for every website I go to. But I still can play my online games fine, like Counter Strike. And when I bridge my new cox connection and my old comcast connection I get speeds like 5mbs.
July 16th, 2006 at 9:29 pm
You forgot the phone line at 38.00 per month for DSL.
38+14=$52
for 3$ less I can get cable at 6Meg
RESPONSE: Phone lines for SBC is $15 per month without the additional features… and well this deal works best if u have SBC phone already. You do not need any extra phone line for SBC DSL if u already have a line.
July 16th, 2006 at 9:31 pm
i have AT&T basic phone service (I dont use the line to make calls, just DSL) for $5/month
July 16th, 2006 at 9:40 pm
What’s more is that when you go to cancel Comcast adn tell them that it’s because they are too expensive, they will often extend your discount. This can go on for a while.
July 16th, 2006 at 9:44 pm
When did you get your prices for SBC (AT&T really) DSL?
I currently pay $17.99 a month for 3mbps down (a paltry 756ish kbps up). When I first signed up for DSL it was $25 a month for 1.5mbps. Now it is $24 a month for 6mbps down. The prices have been going down about every 4-6 months. The lowest is like $13 a month for 1.5mbps down.
Now they (SBC/AT&T) try to say that it is only good for new and/or online sign-ups, but I just called DSL Tech and they did everything right then and there.
Comcast keeps calling me, as I have them for cable tv, to sell me $19.99 a month for 6mbps down, and I think maybe 1mbps up, for 6 months. After that if jacks up to like $45 a month, if I keep cable TV. Without cable TV it goes up to like $60ish a month. Not to mention Comcast cable goes out whenever it rains hard around here. With SBC it has gone out like 3 times in 2 and a half years.
Yes having to have phone service sucks to get DSL, but the prices that Comcast charge if you don’t have their cable service, and in some spots they are requiring that you have digital cable, are even more outrageous. Not to mention that the prices of DSL are just getting lower, maybe not much more, but at the price I am paying, I am not complaining.
RESPONSE: I just searched on google (for these searches check the links on the right
.. ) .. and found this for my area .. Cut and pasting : $12.99/month
for the first 12 months. $25 Rebate Up to 384-1500Kb .. this is like
1mbps + .. and u can get a rebate/ cash back / gift card elsewhere !
July 16th, 2006 at 9:47 pm
I tried this. The perks are great, but the first month you have to pay around $150 for setup of phone line ($42.50) phone service basic = $30 + $19.99 Internet + shit load of taxes & ++++. Also At&t/SBc/Yahoo DSL sucks (they want to get rid of net neutrality.) i do not want to put another dime in their pockets.
Comcast has amazing customer service, no hassle cancellation, moving, etc. and I never lost connection for 1 sec in 9 months with them. after 6mos they charge around $77 for 8mbps down (more consistent than Cox) but it is worth it.
July 16th, 2006 at 9:51 pm
You have to watch comcast on these 19.99/month deals… they didn’t honor them for me, claiming you also have to have cable TV with them to make it work. Cheapest TV was around 19/month so it works out at around $42 I think for cable tv (78 channels) + internet. That and being stung for a connection fee because the property wasn’t wired in.
Comcast is not to be trusted, at least around Atlanta.
July 16th, 2006 at 9:56 pm
Brendan, the reason you can still connect is because they’ve only done a soft disconnect. They haven’t physically disconnected you yet.
July 16th, 2006 at 10:25 pm
I simply call comcast and tell them that I would like to pay less. Most of the time they will give me a rate of $29.99 for 3 months. other times its $35.99 for 6 months. at the end of the promotion period just call and tell them the same. I dont think that in the 3 years i’ve been with them i’ve paid the full price once.
A few months ago I got Comcast digital cable (TV), they rased my internet speed to 6mb. After canceling the tv they have not reduced the speeds to 4mb.
July 16th, 2006 at 10:49 pm
Problem 1: Must have land line phone to have DSL
Problem 2: Linux users have to waste hours on phone with comcast to have them “register” your modem because Comcast is stupid.
Problem 3: You did not calculate any of the “set-up” costs, which if you neglect to mail in their coupon that they claim they will send you, then you pay the full amount
I have comcast…. I despise them!
RESPONSE: no coupons to send for comcast or sbc.
July 17th, 2006 at 12:26 am
In Sweden, it’s no more than USD$20 for a 10mBit connection. I’m loving it here.
July 17th, 2006 at 1:21 am
To bad Comcast is spotty and you never get the speeds that are rated. Cable goes out when it rains. And it’s not the fittings on the lines at the house, it’s them. They all suck. We’re all supposed to have 46 MB right now, according to the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which they never followed. Seems like T-mobile Wifi is the only thing I have consistently used that works as described.
July 17th, 2006 at 1:48 am
Only 4Mbps? for US$50 a month? For $49 a month I get 10Mbps speeds and 80 TV channels through my IP provider Netvigator Broadband/NOW Broadband TV.
July 17th, 2006 at 5:51 am
sounds just like what was done with the phone companies a while back, nice tip… for those that have access to more than one company in their coverage area, I don’t, cable companies like monopolies
July 17th, 2006 at 8:39 am
I pay only 39.99$ to COX for 8MBS speed!!
July 17th, 2006 at 8:46 am
The problem with this (at least in my area) is that you have to have them come by and set everything up… Comcast won’t set up cable anything for you with you being home. SBC in my area won’t do that either.
Comcast works, but 1) it’s overpriced, and 2) if you do have a problem, it’s exceptionally difficult to talk to someone who knows what they’re talking about.
SBC has even worse technical support and is slower, but at least isn’t so rediculously expensive.
July 17th, 2006 at 10:25 am
Wow and I thought my ISP was alot.
I get 15MB down and 2MB up. All for $35 a month, but they also gave me a free modem, and router. There is no installation fees or setup charges. They don’t give you the greatest router but it works so I ebayed my old units and made a little money back.
And if I really wanted to for an extra $10 so for $45 I could get 30MB down but the upload stays at 2MB’s.
July 18th, 2006 at 8:22 am
That’s a good point Darin, I hate having to pay the extra $20 a month for a phone line I do not use… pure taxes and Verizon rip off money.
July 18th, 2006 at 10:06 am
I have Comcast cable + basic TV, live in MA, and pay about $55 for it. I called to cancel or get a better rate, and they said “I see that you have never had a promotion, so I can give you about $13 off for 3 months.” Not much, but something.
July 18th, 2006 at 2:31 pm
I have been using Comcast broadband internet for years and have never paid more than around $29.99/mo (slightly more w/fees). I signed up 3 or 4 years ago on a special $20/mo for 6 months plan. Just before the six months ended I called to cancel because they were going to raise it to $50. I explained that I was going to switch to DSL for $24/mo (I didn’t mention which company) because $50 was too much. They put me on hold for a minute and then told me I could have it for $29.99 a month for a year. I have been repeating this method since then, but they usually make the deal for 6 months at which time I have to call them and threaten to cancel again. And they always give me lecture saying that their service is faster and better then DSL.
I switched to DirectTV from Comcast two years ago for cable TV service so the fact that I don’t have cable TV with Comcast may have some bearing on the deal I get.
I have never had a single technical problem or downtime with Comcast and the speed is very fast (3Mbs).
July 18th, 2006 at 2:45 pm
That’s a pretty good tip. I have to admit I never thought about juggling services like this in order to take advantage of their pricing wars. I might just have to give this a try to see what happens
. Thanks!

I’m in MI with AT&T’s DSL. I signed up last August for a year for $14.99/mo.
When I just called to get another year, they wanted me to increase my speed (I’ve got the lowest speed DSL, which is fine). I told them I wanted the same deal new customers can get $12.99/mo for the lowest speed. The first guy said no, so I said, “Fine, I know I’ll have to go through 3 layers of supervisors, go ahead and transfer me to your supervisor. Otherwise I’m going to switch to Earthlink.” (In this area, Earthlink has $12.99/mo for 6 months.) When the next person got on the line, she immediately offerred the $12.99/mo for a year.

I have Comcast and they are too expensive. I have basic limited cable for 15.00.Comcast give me a discount and I only pay 42.00 for cable internet…wow what a deal.
As of 9/29/06 I am transferring to ATT DSL for 12.99, I called att to find out how far was I from the switching station and what is the maximum bandwidth at my address, no one can give me a definitive answer at ATT.
My phone bill is $15.00 for basic phone (subsidized by fed and state.)
THE LITTLE KNOWN SECRET THAT COULD SLASH YOUR MONTHLY PHONE BILL if you qualify: Many local telephone companies in Michigan offer the Lifeline and Link-Up programs. Lifeline and Link-Up are programs that help ensure everyone has access to telephone service. These programs provide discounts to income-eligible individuals for both the initial installation costs of telephone service and for monthly telephone bills. Unfortunately, the majority of people who are eligible for these programs have never heard of them! The “low income” qualification is not set as low as you might think (depending on where you live, it can be as high as 135% to 150% of the federal poverty level guidelines), and you may qualify even if you receive social security or other forms of assistance. Those who qualify could receive a discount in local telephone service of around $10 per month, a reduction of up to 50% on local telephone line installation service charges, and have the option to block outgoing long distance service, free of charge (this is not a requirement, but if you allow toll calls to be blocked the usual security deposit may be waived). You can get more details and see if you qualify by visiting the Universal Service Administrative Company’s LifelineSupport.org site, or the Federal Communications Commission’s Lifeline and Link-Up site or Get Connected: Afford-A-Phone si

I do the comcast swap. My roommate and I like using comcast, and aside from being the last area that comcast has yet to upgrade (We still don’t have on-demand)… we’ve found a way to cut our bill in half.
Comcast runs specials that last 3 months for new customers (as long as you have NOT been a customer within the last 3 months). So…
I get the new customer rate for Digital Silver (HBO), HD, DVR, Cable Modem, for about $80 a month. Outrageous, maybe, but less than the $150 it would be otherwise.
Then, in 3 months, I cancel, and my roommate picks up cable (same everything, for $80 a month).
We get at least 4 Mbps downloads, have 100+ channels (mostly crap, but a few goodies here and there)… High Def, and dual HD tuners w/ a DVR. The best part is I’ve been doing this for almost 2 years and they seem to be fine with it. I could never imagine paying $150 for this service. I still have a hard enough time choking down the $80 a month, but split it’s only $40 and that’s not so bad for everything we get.

Check out Naked DSL - phone companies are required by Law to allow you to have DSL access without forcing you to have a phone service.
